The many wonderful “African Moments” we were privileged to experience in Mozambique were as diverse as the wishes of our clients.
White Pearl is built with a keen sense of contemporary style, in a sheltered bay not far from the southern border. If a sophisticated ambiance is your preferred option, then White Pearl is the perfect place for you! The lodge offers a superb 5-star experience with all the comforts of a luxury resort, with warm and friendly staff to boot! Anvil Bay Camp on the other hand, offers its’ guests that Robinson Crusoe kind-of-feeling. It’s the type of place where you truly forget about all the frills of modern life… gosh, you might even forget to look at your cellphone!
Stepping out of our transfer vehicle, the first thing we did was remove our shoes. With our feet now in the warm sand, we made our way through the lush coastal vegetation to reveal the incredible view of the Indian Ocean. In this idyllic place, nothing distracts from the beautiful natural surroundings. Built from all-natural, sustainable materials, this camp is set in the middle of the Maputo Special Reserve, where the motto “less is more” takes on a whole new meaning. Surrounded by indigenous forest, guests are accommodated in so-called “casinhas” and are awakened in the morning by the sound of birds singing their enticing tunes. Romantic bedouin tents provide welcome shade on the endless beach and frame the view of the ocean, where dolphins tend to frolic. Whales and whale sharks are also frequent guests to look out for from the boat or kayak, or even more intimately while snorkelling and scuba diving. It is hard to remove oneself from this serene beach life – and yet one should not miss out on a trip to the lakes, steppes and forests of the Maputo Special Reserve. This 1,040 square kilometre nature reserve is not only home to the last large Mozambican coastal herd of elephants, which is thankfully slowly recovering after the long years of civil war, but also to diverse antelope species, zebras, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles. The area is also an absolute birder’s paradise!
Our conclusion:
If you wish to experience Mozambique in its wild, original essence, then Anvil Bay is the place to head to. Here incredible nature, beach and water sports, for which our neighbouring country is making a name for itself, can be enjoyed in its untouched form. In keeping with the natural surroundings and bearing the interests of the local population in mind, a unique place has emerged that is completely in line with our African Moments philosophy. By visiting the lodge, travellers get to experience their African Journey in a sustainable manner, allowing an area with previous little economic opportunity to flourish. A true private, barefoot wilderness experience!
