Where the four countries of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia converge, the mighty Zambezi River tumbles into the 1700m depths of the majestic and world-famous Victoria Falls. A visit to the Falls, either on the Zimbabwean or Zambian side, is the perfect way to end off your safari trip to Botswana. This is why we left this spectacular natural wonder for last – the culmination of our site inspection trip. Ever since UNESCO declared the Victoria Falls a World Heritage Site in 1989, the Falls have become a “must see” on many a visitor’s bucket list. We were delighted to visit two of our preferred boutique-style lodges in the area.
The Victoria Falls Hotel welcomes guests with its old-world charm, reminiscent of the days of David Livingstone, who named the legendary waterfalls in 1855, after the then reigning Queen Victoria. The attentive staff attend to your every wish, in our case the longing to enjoy the magical falls as “off the beaten track” as possible. Following their insider tip, we departed the hotel in the early morning, walked through the magnificent hotel gardens and within ten minutes, we were looking from the famous Victoria Falls Bridge into its might depths. The adventurous at heart might wish to try the 111m high bungee-jump off the bridge! Thereafter we wandered to the entrance of the Victoria Falls National Park. Following a meandering pathway through the forest, we were now able to view the impressive display of the cascading Victoria Falls from various vantage points. For those who wish to stay close to the Falls, this is the place to choose!
Next stop on our journey was the Victoria Falls River Lodge, situated within the Zambezi National Park. The lodge offers the perfect combination of being able to visit the Victoria Falls, as well as enjoy a wildlife experience at the same time. The tastefully furnished Luxury Tents at the main lodge and its exclusive Island Treetop Suites situated on Kandahar Island, surpassed all our expectations. Guided tours to the Victoria Falls as well as canoe, game-vehicle and walking safaris should not be missed. A sunset or sunrise cruise on the Zambezi is the perfect way to start off or end the day.The more adventurous at heart can enjoy further activities at the Falls, such as bungee-jumping, ziplining, white-water rafting, helicopter flips and scenic flights. There is something for everyone to enjoy!
