The African Moments team has just returned from a site inspection in the lesser known, yet all the more interesting, Madikwe Game Reserve. The malaria-free, Big 5 reserve is situated north-west of Johannesburg, close to the border of Botswana. Many paths lead to this magnificent reserve – whether you prefer flying in a light aircraft or self-driving from Johannesburg, either way, you will enjoy the scenic views on the way.
Similar to the Kruger Park, the Madikwe Game Reserve is a state-run national park. To be exact: the fifth largest in South Africa. Camps and lodges of various categories are distributed over a total of 750 square kilometers. The vast natural habitat that the majestic Big 5 (African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, rhinoceros) shares with zebras, antelopes and many other animals is equally expansive. During our autumn and winter season, the chance for exciting wildlife encounters is great – the bush is thinner, the animals seek out waterholes in the drier season and your experienced ranger will give you intimate insights into the flora and fauna of the area, while ensuring that no more than 2 – 3 vehicles gather at any animal sighting. As a tour operator specializing in exclusive, boutique travel, the African Moments team visited three luxury lodges during our stay: Tuningi, Motswiri and Etali Safari Lodges. Each one of these lodges has their own unique charm and flair. Our personal favourite – Etali Safari Lodge! From the moment you step through the beautiful wooden doors, one is warmly greeted by the friendly lodge staff with a cool refreshment towel and welcome drink. Susan and Koos Potgieter have put together a fantastic team that has an intimate understanding of how to make your stay a once in a lifetime experience! The elevated location of the lodge gives one a spectacular view over the reserve and the waterhole. The spacious suites are each individually decorated and the unique, contemporary design of the lodge, blending into its natural surroundings, has won the lodge many accolades over the years. The outside traditional “boma” dinner, which takes place under the vast night sky, is a truly special experience not to be missed!
Our conclusion:Madikwe is a fantastic safari experience to include in your journey, particularly if you don’t have the time to travel to the Kruger National Park. The reserve offers the perfect style of accommodation to match every guest’s needs. Tuningi is the perfect lodge for families and oneymooners and couples will feel right at home at the romantic Motswiri or Etali Lodges.
