Our second African Moment is close to home. On the outskirts of central Cape Town and only five minutes away from some of our favourite beaches in Clifton and Camps Bay, Ellerman House is the epitome of elegance and style. It’s an experience that is hard to put in words and uniquely combines luxurious accommodation, an exquisite art collection, consummate hospitality and sumptious cuisine. Ellerman House is a true retreat within Cape Town and offers a high level of privacy to its guests.
Ellerman House is located on the slopes of Lion’s Head in the prestigious suburb Bantry Bay, offering unsurpassable views of the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island. The former private estate of Sir John and Lady Ellerman is today a luxury boutique hotel, gourmet restaurant, art gallery and wine collection in one.
Ellerman House has eleven rooms, two suites, and two private villas. Attention to detail ensures that no two rooms alike. Facilities include two lounges, a library, two dining rooms, a spa, a main pool, gym, whisky bar, and expansive outdoor space.
More than 1,000 paintings by South African artists – from18th century artists such as Thomas Bowler to rising modern stars such as Phil Lemon Hlungwani are united here. As the Ellerman team put it, they have more paintings than walls to hang them on!
The wine gallery, with over 8000 bottles of outstanding wine, is any wine connoisseur’s dream! What has been created here by the architects, designers and sculptors, is a work of art in its own right and pays tribute to South African winemaking, engages all the senses (including the 6th!) and celebrates wine in its finest form!
Our conclusion:
Cape Town is known for its many fine hotels. But a similar experience to the one we had at Ellerman House – well, we have truly never quite had one like it! Anyone interested in understated luxury, art, wine and culinary delights will find his Eldorado here. A definite must for the bucket list – a place to have stayed at once in one’s lifetime!
